New Email
Hi all, my first time on here so hope i'm doing this correctly.
I use outlook express for e-mail. For some reason I can't open any links. For example I receive some of my bills in e-mail. It will give a link to go to to open my bill but it won't open when clicked on. Any ideas. Thanks Lizzy

Re: e-mail links

Hi Lizzy,

Yes, perfect, and welcome to E-Mail Questions!

I use outlook express for e-mail. For some reason I can't open any links. For example I receive some of my bills in e-mail. It will give a link to go to to open my bill but it won't open when clicked on. Any ideas. Thanks Lizzy
I have seen this happen when an unexpected program makes itself the default web browser on your computer.

The first thing to check is Internet Explorer:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Go to Tools and select Internet Options

  • Go to the Programs tab and check the option for IE to do a default browser check the next time it starts

  • Click Apply and then OK.
  • Close all Internet Explorer browsers and then Start Internet Explorer.
  • Say Yes and make Internet Explorer your default web browser.

  • Close Outlook Express and start it back up.

Another possibility is that Outlook Express is configured to read e-mail in plain text:

  • Open Outlook Express
  • Go to the Tools menu and select Options

  • Go to the Read tab
  • Uncheck the box for read all messages in plain text

  • Click Apply and then OK
  • Restart Outlook Express

Lastly, a third option to try if the above two fail is within the Outlook Express Security Options:

  • Open Outlook Express
  • Go to the Tools menu and select Options

  • Go to the Security tab
  • Uncheck the box for do not allow attachments to be saved or opened if they could potentially be a virus

  • Click Apply and then OK.
  • Restart Outlook Express.

Please let us know if any of these solutions were the fix to your problem. Thank you.

Hi Lizzy,

It appears that your anti-virus software is out of date.

Is it possible that this is causing the problem?

Internal Virus Database is out of date.
Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com
Version: 8.0.175 / Virus Database: 270.9.0/1778 - Release Date: 11/9/2008 2:14 PM

To update your AVG anti-virus:

  • Find the AVG icon in the system tray

  • Right click on it and select Update Now

There is one more thing I want to check before continuing. Many bills arrive in PDF format.

Are you able to click and open links and attachments now that your anti-virus and adobe reader are up to date?
