After creating the how to add a new email account to Thunderbird tutorial, I went to add Gmail to Thunderbird and realized easy the Thunderbird team has made adding a Gmail account, no entering mail servers of any of that confusing stuff.
First enable POP access in Gmail.
Start Thunderbird go to Tools > Account Settings and click New Account
Select Gmail and hit next
Enter the name you want to use on outgoing email and your Gmail address
This is just the summary page just press finish. You will notice a separate set of folders on your folder tree just for your Gmail account, this is nice because it keeps everything separate. Now on the main Thunderbird screen press Get mail and you will be promoted for your password.
As always if you have any questions feel free to reply.
