How do I configure my Hotmail or MSN email account to work with POP3?

The following directions can be used to configure a pop3 connection in a program such as Outlook Express that is installed on your computer:

• Open Outlook Express

• Select Accounts from the Tools menu

• Select the Mail tab, push the Add button, and select Mail

• Type in your Real Name and push the Next button
• Type in your E-Mail Address and push the Next button
• Select POP3 as the type of e-mail account,
• The incoming mail server is pop3.live.com
• The outgoing mail server is smtp.live.com

• Type in your full MSN Hotmail address and password and then click Next

• Click Finish.
  
• Select the Hotmail account in your accounts list
• Click Properties
• Select the Servers tab
• For the outgoing mail server check the box for My server requires authentication

• Select the Advanced tab
• For both incoming and outgoing mail check the box for This server requires a secure connection
• The outgoing server port is 25
• The incoming server port is 995

​

• Click OK. Click Close.

Congratulations, your Outlook Express is now configured to check your MSN Hotmail Plus account!

A MSN Hotmail Plus account is required to check your MSN Hotmail account with POP3 mail program on your computer.

Sorry, but although you used to be able check a free hotmail account with a mail client on your computer MSN Hotmail disabled this feature.

Update: As of January 14 2009 free POP3 access is available in the following countries:

United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Update: As of February 12 2009 free POP3 access is available in the United States!
