Client not checking for new mail

I have a windows laptop and I'm currently using Opera Mail. My ISP is TWC/roadrunner. The client checks for new mail only upon startup. Even though it's set to check for new mail every 10 minutes, it does not. Also, clicking on the send/receive button does nothing. Only a restart of the app will get new mail. I got the same results with Thunderbird and with Outlook Express before that. By the way, I also use the Mail app on my iPad and that works fine.

Hi @fdepalma

To change how often Opera Mail checks for new email:

  • Go to the Settings
  • Click Mail Accounts
  • Edit the selected account
  • Go to the Incoming tab
  • Change the number of minutes and click OK

Thanks for the replay, but I already had the app set to check for new mail every 10 minutes. The problem is that it does NOT check for new email every 10 minutes. Neither does the "check/send" button. I have both the "check for mail every X minutes" AND the "include this account..." boxes checked. But nothing works as it should. I got the SAME results with Thunderbird and Outlook Express. But Time Warner Cable has been no help.

If you configure Opera Mail on your desktop to check a different email account, such as a Yahoo/Gmail/Hotmail account, do you still have the problem, of no new messages being detected?

Please ignore the previous question. I see that others are having this same problem and it doesn't seem to matter which email client they are using.

@rfs9999 If I figure out my Time Warner email login, would you be interested in checking their IMAP servers and see if you notice what's wrong so a useful bug can be submitted to them?

@fdepalma If you switch to pop3 with "leave mail on the server" does that work better as a bandaid for the moment?

If you leave mail on the server you should still be able to see it from other devices and delete from them when it's ready to be deleted.

Actually, that brings up another question. Maybe it's a locking issue. If you delete your account from all devices, and only have device configured as IMAP, does that "fix" the problem?

If that's the case, we can simply let Time Warner know there is something wrong with their mailbox locking and it's causing problems for people with multiple devices configured with their IMAP settings.

I started to switch to pop3 and that looked like it was going to take a long time to fetch all the messages again so I stopped the whole process. Of the two suggestions you've provided above, which would be the one that you would do first?

Thanks again for your time and help.

I have a Time Warner IMAP account and have not been able to reproduce the problem when using the imap server mail.twc.com and Opera Mail 1.0 on Windows 8.1

Are you using that server name or a legacy name?

Which version of Windows are you running?

If you delete and recreate your Time Warner settings in Opera Mail, does that fix the problem?

I am using Opera Mail 1.0 on Windows XP.
I am using the server name: mail.twc.com.
I haven't yet tried either of the two suggestions you've offered above since I'm not sure which one to go with (pop account on my main computer or delete the account from my other devices).
I WILL now try recreating my Time Warner IMAP settings to see if that does anything.

Skip anything related to POP3.

Try turning off your other devices.

Then while they're still off, delete and recreate your IMAP settings in Opera Mail.

Does Opera Mail work OK now?

If yes, start turning on your other devices.

Does turning on the other devices cause the problem to come back?

I've turned off other devices and recreated IMAP settings in Opera Mail. I'm afraid it did not work. I've tried several tests: If I send myself email from Opera, I receive it as soon as I send it. But I have been waiting for more than 25 minutes to receive test emails from my wife and from my gmail and yahoo mail accounts. Nothing I do will bring those up in Opera, even though they are there in my inbox when I check TWC online. I get no response in Opera when I hit the "check/send" button or the "resynchronize all messages" button.

I'm willing to try another email client but I fear the problem lies with Time Warner and I'm reluctant to change providers because of the problems that come along with that.

An addendum to previous post: It's been a couple of hours now and there's no real change. No new messages came in when I restarted Opera Mail (even though I know there were messages to be collected). Hitting "check/send" and "resynchronize" did nothing. Weirdly, if I open and close the settings dialogue box a few times, I can sometimes get results with clicking on "resynchronize." That eventually worked tonight. But that's no way to check email, is it?

If anyone has any suggestions for other email clients that work correctly with TWC, I'd be happy to try them.

Thanks.

I'll get some debugging info using Thunderbird and see if we (@rfs9999 is helping) can figure this out and get a ticket with useful info opened with Time Warner if needed.

The IMAP problem does not happen with my account.

Can you try using these directions from @rfs9999 to create a DEBUG log that might be useful to Time Warner support?
