spam in Thunderbird not in webmail

I have Charter email. I use Thunderbird to get my email.
I've been getting a lot of spam from one source and decided to look at my webmail and see if I could do something there and I found that none of the spam I get in Thunderbird is in my Charter webmail.
How can this be?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04

Is the spam not in your webmail becuase it was already downloaded to Thunderbird?

No, only the one.

My non-spam mail stays on Charters server for a while.

No.The Spam folder is visible.
