All mail programs have read and unread messages. For the most part what's read/unread is marked by how long you have previewed the message. By default Thunderbird's mark as read timeout (the time it takes to mark a message as read) is one second. That's too short for me.
To change this select Tools > Options, in the options window click on the advanced section and tick wait .. seconds before marking a message as read. Place the number of second you want to wait until a message is marked as read, I chose 10.
