How to hide the ads in Gmail

This is actually a bit of a trick post since I'm also wondering "Where did the ads go?"

If you still see ads and want to block them try Adblock Plus.

I do not see any ads in my Gmail. I'm on Windows 8. It doesn't matter if I'm using Chrome or IE. Neither web browser has ad blocking enabled for Google service pages. I don't have any other ad blocking plugins installed.

I may have gone to the Google advertising opt-out preferences at some point and turned off content based ads thinking that would stop them from scanning my inbox. The preference are located at the bottom of that page. I don't believe those are designed to stop displaying ads too. It doesn't matter if my Gmail is set to cozy, comfortable, or compact. I have the lab for multiple inboxes installed, but turning that off doesn't cause ads to start displaying again.

Does anyone still see ads in their free Gmail account?
