    Howdy,

There is a new application out which lets you back up Gmail onto your computer so you have a local copy which can then be imported into Thunderbird, Outlook, or just about any other email client if need be.

Be advised: This program is 3rd party and not officially endorsed by Google. Use at your own risk. The program requires you enable IMAP but that's easy enough and well worth the trouble so that you actually have a backup of your mail. The directions are self explanatory if you run into any troubles please post back here.

    Good Luck,
    Dan

PS: This program also lets you restore email to your Gmail account which is useful when switching to a new Gmail account, I'll layout those steps in another thread.
