What is an Email server and why would it be required for any company who wishes to use the method of communication through emails?

Why would an Email Server be required? What are the functions of it?

In less words a mail servers are the computers that handle and store your emails. When you send an email to someone you don't send it directly to their computer, you send it out a mail server at your ISP, your ISP sends it to their mail server, and then they are able to get the email after it has arrived there.
