Hello,

Some software is starting to generate confusing alerts about Java software being out of date.

For example Avast is warning about out of date java, but FileHippo will report that the same computer is up to date.

The problem is caused when a computer has both Java 6 and Java 7 installed.

The fix is to uninstall all versions of the old Java 6 and keep only the latest Java 7.

Most people do not need Java 6. I uninstalled the three listed versions of Java 6 and also the J2SE.

I wasn't sure about J2SE but figure if it's still needed I can reinstall it.

The directions vary between Windows versions, but you can generally find list by going to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs

At the Garden Web computer help forum I learned about JavaRa (e.g. here at MajorGeeks) which also does the job.
