unable to open emails after a certain thread length

I have found with hotmail that after a certain amount of too-ing and fro-ing in an email exchange I will receive an email from my contact that comes with the following error message
The message is too big to be completely displayed. Only the first 1023 KB is shown

Typically, the exchanges are not weighty tomes of prose but just a few lines each. And If I forward the email to another of my email accounts I still can't open it.

Do I need to adjust some setting to stop this happening and if I'm braching some kind of limit how will I know I'm getting close?

There does not appear to be a setting that can fix this problem, but ere is a link that includes two work around solutions so that you can read and delete the email :
