Wed, 15 Oct 2014 23:53:07 +0100 what does the +0100 mean as the email came from a person in the same time zone as myself, so it can't refer to; + 1 hour?

It's the time zone configured on the server or the sender's computer is set to that time zone. It depends if you're looking at the date header or delivery line in the full headers.
