Advertising Spam was just sent from my hotmail account to people on my contact list. How do I make sure this doesn't happen again.

Are you sure it came from your account? You can check the hotmail full email headers to see if the spam originated from your account or from a spammer. If you are not sure it doesn't hurt to change your password and security questions and answers.
