Pop to IMAP

I recently tried adding my hotmail account on my imac. Apparently I added it as an IMAP and now have lost all of my past emails. I have looked in my Trash folder and they are not there. Is there any way to get these back?

An IMAP client does not automatically download and delete messages like POP. In fact, one of the advantages of IMAP is that you can leave the messages on the mail server and view them in your IMAP client

If you accidentally configured your hotmail account on your imac for POP it might have downloaded and deleted your messages from the server. Have you looked in your hotmail account on your imac for the messages?
