Why do you think you get so much spam?

Do you give your e-mail address to untrusted sites or post it in forums?

Do you forward and/or receive chain letters where you are in a large list of CC's?

People that I know forward me all kinds of crap. I dumped one email address because of all the forward emails and now have the same problem all over again. I ask them kindly to stop and they keep doing it

It sounds like you would be best off maintaining 2 separate e-mail addresses.

Use one for important e-mails that you want to keep clean and friends who don't give away your address.

Use the other for friends who you want to keep in contact with but have a hard time resisting the urge to send you spammy chain letters.

I don't understand why people can't respect the fact that you don't want your inbox full of B.S.!!

#1 for me on all web-based services other than Gmail is the ads they're in your face all blinky and annoying.

#2: Advertising signatures..They got some cajones putting ads in the body of my email

#3: Lock-in most don't make it easy to forward mail of because they want to show you as many ads as possible

#4: Lock-in part II POP or IMAP access is almost always an upcharge some of the prices are ridiculous.. I remember back when Hotmail used to be free to download via Outlook or Outlook Express.

#5: Spam: An email address I don't even use gets all kinds of porn spam, so much that I cannot use the account. Their spam filters only catch about 50% of it. To be truthful I only got the @live.com address when it first came out for an easy to remember MSN messenger handle every time I turn on the client I get unread email notice pop ups that are all spam.

#6: When they tie in with an instant messenger like Yahoo or MSN messenger the instant messenger doesn't respect your computers email preferences. Say Thunderbird is your default client. Right clicking on a contact and selecting email automatically opens their web-based email all in the name of showing you more ads.

Is that enough complaints about webmail? :p

It wouldn't be terribly difficult to offer free forwarding that automatically appends advertising onto your e-mail while it's one it's way to being forwarded to your account. Evil, but doable.

I've found that gmail.com does an excellent job at filtering out spam. Once in a while it flags a non-spam message as spam, but overall I'm very impressed with the gmail capabilities as it relates to Spam Management.

On the other hand, my yahoo account currently has a bit of spam...
Welcome, Doug!

You have 53051 unread messages:
Yikes!! :) Luckily, I don't check my yahoo account anymore as I've migrated over to gmail exclusively. :)

Anyways, back to gmail: It's a free account and you get ~7gb of storage. What's really neat with gmail is that the search box (if you are capable of searching on unique text) is very good at finding lost emails, I use it all the time to find what I'm looking for!

I agree that gmail does a great job at filtering spam. I do not use gmail as my primary e-mail address, but I do have my gmail configured to forward a copy of all e-mail to my primary address. If I need to give out my e-mail to a questionable contact I prefer to give out my gmail account does a great job of filtering out the junk while making sure that messages I want reach the e-mail address that I check most often.

I think I am going to dump my email addresses altogether and start a new one and only give it to people that won't spam me. For the spammers, I will tell them to send me private messages on DiscussNY. They can't forward a bunch of crap in private messages.
