How to tell email has been read?

I am considering using Hotmail as my new email account. Before I do, I want to know that I can tell when an email I send has been read and when. Is there a way to know this on Hotmail Email? This is an important feature to my decision to use Hotmail.

Hello,

If you want read receipts with Hotmail you will need to use a mail program such as Mozilla Thunderbird configured to access Hotmail with POP3.

If you want a webmail that supports read receipts natively I recommend getting LuxSci webmail hosting.

Thank you Popowich...I use Google Chrome for browsing and Facebook. Is there a way to use Hotmail for read receipts on Chrome? My families email is AOL, and was wondering if I change Hotmail to PoP3, will it affect their AOL accounts? We all use the same computer and I don't want to mess things up for them, and I had trouble with Firefox, that's why I use Chrome now. Unfortunately, I am supposed to use Hotmail email for a new job I started, and I am completely lost when it comes to computers! And I need to be able to see if my co-workers get the emails I send and if they are read. Please help? This is all so complex to me!
