I repeatedly get messages from my email client (Google Mail) that it has not downloaded messages. It says that the server has too many messages, and to delete some. I try to delete, but it either takes forever, or doesn't work. I delete 1/2 of all messages. Then a week later the same thing happens, as though the messages came back somehow. It says I have 50,277 messages.
Can I set a limit how many messages the inbox will hold?

    Hi Cburg,

Try the combination of using IMAP and using the settings to limit how many emails Gmail presents to IMAP.

The settings are near the bottom of this page - Gmail Settings

you might use some good mail client(Outlook/Thunderbird) and archive them to your local drive. It will vacate your inbox to some extent.

I'm using GMail. I have a chromebox, so is the only one available.
    Still no solution.
    Thanks!
