How to fix can not save sent mail error when using IMAP in Outlook 2013

I was working with an Outlook 2013 configured to use IMAP that could not save a copy of outgoing email to the sent mail folder.

To fix the problem the root folder path for the account was updated from blank to INBOX

To update the root folder path:

  • Go to File and click Account Settings
  • Click Account Settings
  • Highlight the IMAP account and click the Change button
  • Click the More Options button
  • Go to the Advanced tab
  • In the box for root folder path type INBOX
  • Click OK a few times to save the change and close the settings windows
