forgetting email password

my father has an email address and he forgot his password. However, when trying to retrieve his password and recovering his account, an error is popping up stating that the microsoft account was not recognised. He is sure that the email address he is inserting is correct. Could you kindly assist?

Try having someone he emailed for past emails from him to find out the correct email address.

There are a couple possibilities including that he's not remembering the correct address, or it was inactive long enough that Microsoft disabled the account.
