Erroneously retained emails in my inbox

Can anyone help? My inbox continues to show multiple emails despite deleting them. I have moved the emails I want to keep to a temporary folder, deleted everything else, the moved the temporary folder back to my inbox. BUT, my inbox indicates the deleted emails are still there and within 24 hours they reappear. How do I solve this connubdrum?
