Disappearing emails and not receiving new ones

After deleting approx. 5000 unwanted emails, I returned to the In-Box and all of my emails since Jan. 2012 have disappeared. The In-Box is not receiving any new emails however I am still receiving new emails on my internet server. What could be the problem?

Who is your internet provider?

Is your mail client set to only download unread emails?

When you look at the webmail are there any unread emails that are not downloading?
