Deleting individual from gmail but not blocking them

I looked through some other messages but am still having trouble completely deleting an individual from gmail. I don't want to block them but just delete them. I could not get a trash can to appear by the individual's name as stated in one post and am not able to click on the "delete contact" under the "more" section as it is not highlighted as an option. I followed the given instructions but keep getting stuck.
