To update the core ruleset use a command from cron such as :
31 * * * * /usr/local/clamav/bin/freshclam --quiet
If you want to add more virus definitions to your install try these :
Sanesecurity's ClamAV - Phishing and Scam/Spam Signatures
I used download script #2. It was easy to configure and appears to handle the virus type I was having difficulty with.
