To get Thunderbird to open directly to your inbox please follow these steps:
  • Open Thunderbird
  • Select Account Settings from the Tools menu.
  • Click Server Settings.
  • Check the box that says Check for new messages at startup.
  • Click the OK button to save.
The next time you open Thunderbird it should open directly to your inbox.

Whenever I do a search and open up the searched for message, there seems to be no way to get to the inbox without left scrolling the tabs all the way to the inbox tab.

I used to click on it in the old format at the top. Any other way to quickly return to the inbox?

Hello,

From the right side of your Thunderbird you can click the arrow and select Inbox.

How do I return to full list of search hits?

When I do a search of my Thunderbird email and click on one of the emails that pop up, how do I get back to the full list of hits? Example: I enter a keyword and it pulls up 20 emails... When I click 1 of the 20, the next page will display that full message and have a link to 2 or 3 other emails from the original list of 20 hits (the 2 or 3 others only appear because they have the same subject as the message I clicked to read). How do I get back to the original list of 20 hits? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you

Thank you for your attempt to help. My tool bar does not look like the one you showed though. Mine is where you have to side scroll through literally 30 or 35 tabs before seeing the original search tab. It's just ludicrous how Thunderbird has it set up... Get 30 search results and click one and next page only shows it and maybe two or three others - but only if others happen to have the exact same subject as the hit that was clicked.

Why does they have it to where it narrows my search when I in no way want it to do so and clicked on nothing to cause it? Infuriated for allowing comp geek to install it... the one who told me "how great" Thunderbird is.

Thanks again. Hope to hear back from you if you can think of anything else.

I am surprised that there is not a keyboard shortcut or view menu option, but I think I have a solution.

Go to Tools -> Addons, do a search, and install the QuickFolders addon.

After restarting Thunderbird drag your inbox to the QuickFolders menu bar.

Now no matter how many searches and emails you have opened up you should always be able to get back to the inbox with a single click.

BTW, do you also not have the arrow near the top right of your Thunderbird?

What version of Thunderbird are you using? Help -> About Thunderbird will tell you the version.

Version 3.1.7

I don't see an arrow in the upper right, other than the one to side scroll the last 30 or 40 emails, email searches, etc.

Regarding your previous post, I twice tried installing the add-on you mentioned. It wouldn't install...error message: "Thunderbird could not install the file at blah blah blah because download error -228."

I appreciate your efforts very much. Thank you, Tom

A - I have NO arrow on the top right side of my Thunderbird
B - In addons no "Quick Folder Addon" show ups
C- In Tools I have No "server setting"
D- My version is 38.0.1

So scrolling via left top arrow through a hundred (slightly exaggerated) message icons to get to back to the Inbox drives me nuts and I wish I had never come to Thunderbird from Outlook which I always hated too.
