Problems with latest upgrade of Thunderbird

On Saturday I was in Thunderbird when an alert popped up asking if I would like to upgrade to the latest version. Without thinking about it I clicked on OK and then suddenly realised I had made a terrible blunder.

The new layout of Thunderbird is quite different than the version I was used to and it is really quite slow. I use MailWasher Pro as my spam filter and when I have viewed and vetted what is sitting in my box at the ISP's I tell MailWasher to process my emails. From being an almost instantaneous loading of Thunderbird to download the emails, there is now a considerable delay.

My wife has this version of Thunderbird installed on the Laptop and it is causing no end of problems for her, such as time out errors, cannot gain access to her domain site, tells her that the user name or password is incorrect, and so on.

Is anyone else having these sorts of problems with the latest upgrade of Thunderbird? If I could go back to the previous version I would but, having trawled the 'Net, it appears that this is not a recommended course of action.

It seems that Thunderbird has lost its way or has become just too clever for its own good. I think that I'm going to have to consider changing to Outlook, a prospect that doesn't particularly thrill me. Does anyone have a suggestion that might save us from having to make this change?

Are you now using Thunderbird 3.1.2? Which version worked OK for you?

If possible would you prefer to downgrade instead of moving to Outlook?

Hi Raymond
Thank you for your replies. I must apologise for the delay in responding but, although I have tried, I couldn't remember how to do so. Must be getting old. I do have Thunderbird 3.1.2. but I am slowly becoming more tolerant of it and I think I can probably live with it.
The major problem is Thunderbird on Madeleine's ASUS Laptop. We've done everything to try and get it to retrieve the emails from her domain site but nothing works. We've deleted the account, re-created it, done battle with Thunderbird trying to make the server an IMAP rather than a POP3 server. It keeps telling us that the user name or password is incorrect when it's not.
The problem for Madeleine is that she has so many folders in Thunderbird that to move across to Outlook she would have to re-create them and probably lose some very important emails in the process.
I'm beginning to wonder if there is a problem with her ASUS laptop or perhaps Windows 7, or both. She can't go back to a previous version of Thunderbird - as far as I know - because she has not had a previous version on this Laptop, as it is quite new. Her old Acer Laptop has no problems handling the domain site.
The normal emails from our ISP (Optus) pose no problem, just the domain emails.
We followed Big Dan's suggestion (delete and re-create account) and very briefly things worked okay but then returned to their problematic ways. Short of throwing the computer out the window I'm lost as far as a solution goes. We've tried Postbox which is almost the same as Thunderbird but it was even worse.
If you could suggest some other solutions we'd love to hear from you.

Do you have a control panel that you can use to reset her password?

Can the ISP reset the password?

Is it possible someone else has/had access to the account and has been resetting the password?

Try changing both the password and the security question/answer pairs associated with the account.

One possibility I'm thinking of if it's a hosted domain account and using SSL. Lots of hosted domains don't have SSL certificates signed by an issuing authority like Verisign. The first time you connect TB tells you about the problem and either to accept the certificate as is or mark it invalid if you mark it as invalid TB will never 'trust' the server as you told it not to.

Do you remember TB throwing up any kind of security warning the first time you connected on the new computer?

Hi Big Dan
Many thanks for your email and my apologies for taking so long to reply. The only warning we receive is that the user name or password is invalid. We've decided that the only solution is to use Thunderbird for emails from our ISP and to use Outlook for emails from the domain, and have made the necessary adjustments.
This problem has been such a time-waster for everyone that it's time to give up on it and to get on with it.
Keep well.

Dont' give up I'm sure we can fix it. Would you be interested in remote support where I log in to your computer remotely and control it as if I were sitting in front of it?

Hi Big Dan

Thanks a million for your very generous offer. I'm currently considering ditching Windows 7 and returning to XP Pro. My big concerns, of course, are the enormous amount of work this will involve and that this desperate measure may not fix the problem.
Do you have a view on this consideration?

Hi Trader,

I think it's a big drastic to downgrade to XP over a Thunderbird problem. Just my .02. :)

Hi Big Dan

Many thanks for your response. I have to agree with you, but things have become quite desperate. Yesterday, we were trying to scan a document into the computer and everything went crazy. We've got one of those HP multi-function printers - dreadful things - and Windows 7 decided it didn't recognise it. It took ages to get it to print again but scanning was not an option.
If your generous offer to link in still holds, I'd be very grateful if you would look at Thunderbird. I've done everything you've suggested but to no avail.

Hi Big Dan
How the wheel of fortune turns. Madeleine's ASUS Laptop has just "died". Perhaps I cursed it once too often. So, it's off to the supplier for repair and just maybe they'll fix it - one way or another.

Hi Big Dan

Greetings to you. Yes, we got the ASUS back, problems and all. But fate stepped in and lent a hand as Madeleine and I were out shopping. We came across this little computer shop I'd never noticed before and went in and spoke to the owner.

He came across a couple of days ago and within a few minutes he'd resolved the problem. I'd made a dumb keying error which I hadn't noticed despite your advice - it's no fun getting old - and everything's now going as sweet as a nut.

I have to say I was at the end of my rope with this seemingly insurmountable "problem". So, apologies to Thunderbird and to you for my not seeing the obvious.

Best regards and many thanks again,
