I need to move from mac to windows due to organizational issues. I tried exporting emails from outlook mac to a file using export feature and then tried importing in windows outlook but it doesn't recognize and display this file for importing.

Hello,

The Windows and Mac versions of Microsoft Outlook do not both support same same data file format such as PST.

Try using a 3rd account that supports IMAP such as a Gmail account for the transfers.

Configure that IMAP account with both Outlooks, then copy your email from the Mac to Gmail, and finish with a copy the email from Gmail to Windows.

Thank you popowich. But I tried trasnferring by creating a new gmail accoutn and configured it on both mac and windows outlook and then copied an email folder from saved emails into Inbox of gmail in mac but it stopped responding. I waited for some time and then force quit the application. Now, when I relaunch the outlook, it doesn't display any emails and comes up with blank window.

Have you tried rebuilding the database?

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2360509

Ensure you have enough space and memory on system. Depending upon database size, it might take time.

I have tried rebuilding as suggested in article but rebuilding stops abruptly inbetween. Have checked outlook identity as well as given on officeformachelp.com. It does contain my emails in Main Identity folder.

Hi kickstarter,

Do you have the emails available in an IMAP account on both sides?

If yes, would you mind trying our IMAP Copy service?

It's a web based version of the imap copy script that won't timeout for large accounts:

I'll do yours for free and can have a refund issued to help promote that site.

Thanks again popowich but the emails are not available on IMAP account on both sides. I have the emails stored locally on Mac. If it had been on IMAP, this situation would never have arrived and I would have simply configured email account on windows pc and downloaded emails from IMAP normally. I have already tried synchronizing emails to a newly created IMAP account but since then my outlook has stopped working and is not displaying any emails at all. I am looking further into this and found Outlook cannot open the file because it is not associated with the default identity. Will keep posting the updates.

Try creating a new identity and moving data from old identity to new identity and then rebuild new identity as mentioned.

I have been through almost all possible solutions given on major forums as well as officeformachelp.com but none have been of much help. I came to know that outlook stores messages in olk14 format. Outlook splits messages in multiple files and stores them individually in separate folders. I was able to locate messages in olk14 format and was able to open them using apple textedit. However, they are being displayed in haphazard manner with a lot of special characters in between and a lot of details are missing from messages if opened using texteditor. Will try looking for other solutions as well and post updates.

It's hard to believe you're running into this much trouble.

What about copying to the new IMAP account in smaller batches to avoid timeouts?

Please also make sure to increase the mail server timeout settings for any IMAP servers you're working with to at least 5 minutes.

For me its hard to believe that Microsoft will not incorporate such a basic feature in email client and that this much amount of complexity is required for storing emails. The IMAP method I have already tried and since then outlook is not displaying my emails at all.

After much trouble and looking for a solution online, I was able to find a utility by the name olk14 message recovery and was able to recover my data from outlook identity. I doubt I would be using Outlook ever again.

Having MS Outlook installed in your computer, when user need to import data from other email client like Thunderbird, MAC Outlook, WLM, etc. to Outlook, they can do it manually using Import/Export feature. But sometimes you may find it difficult since the the manual solution is . However there are some third party tool available in the market like: SysTools EML to PST Converter, which I would recommend to you on the basis of my personal use. It allows user to export by selecting the desired eml files as a pst file format.

If you are interested in performing this conversion through manual method, then the role of IMAP account is paramount.

Just follow the steps, mentioned below:

Step 1: First of all Setup an IMAP account using Gmail account.

Step 2: Then add the account to 2011 outlook for mac and office for windows.

Step 3: Now drag email into a folder on the IMAP server and then go back to the windows and drag your emails from IMAP into your email. Now you would be able to complete the process successfully.

If you face trouble in the execution of the above manual method, then you can use automated software like Stellar OLM to PST Converter. But, it is not a free option.
