I don't know how prompt Toby is on answering questions on this forum, but if he's anything like support at hushmail, you guys may be waiting awhile. I emailed support at hushmail as Toby advised, and after three or four days, I finally got a response. Hushmail requested I try certain things in order to try and troubleshoot my problems with their service. I did as instructed and sent in the reply. Eleven days later, and no response. Either way, support seems to be an issue at hushmail. At least in my case. Moving on.................................

I assume you dont have a Premium account, that is you have a free account? Well, if so...you get what youre paying for. Basically there are no free services where there will be staff answering questions and give support. If there are, let me know. I am a Premium user of Hushmail and most responses to my mails to their support has reached me within hours....but they do state on their website that free accounts are not prioritized when it comes to support. That is understandable since Hushmail doesnt even come with ads on free accounts.

CarlS, You are correct. I have a free account at Hushmail. Perhaps I expected too much. I was simply hoping to trial a free account, but the problems I was having made it impossible to trial the account. You are also correct in that "you get what you pay for". No harm no foul. I have plenty of other free accounts to play with.

Since they're doing some revamping of their service this Fall and into next year, perhaps they could be convinced to add mid-level service (as I suggested to Toby above). Reasonably low price with more features and storage than 'free' and better support. Would be nice. :)

What do you mean? They already have a Premium option where you pay 34 dollars for a years subscription which means that you will get 1GB of space, unlimited aliases, priority support and no nag screen when you log in.

What suggestion do you have instead?

Cheers.

Hi, Carl

I was just thinking of something in between the one you mentioned and the free level. Something like EuMX's $16/yr or FM's $15/yr (family plan w/one user) plans. Something that would have more priority support than the free level with more storage than the free level's abysmal 2 mb, while not being quite as expensive as the $34/yr level.

I would assume that such a mid-level plan would be somewhat popular, since other services (like FM, EuMX, Polarismail, Runbox, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) have such $15-$20 levels and have presumably done well with them. It would certainly be popular with the budget-conscious users who might want to have more than one premium webmail account (Hushmail + one somewhere else) without paying so much $$ for both. :)

I myself have a family plan (w/one user) account at FM and like it a lot. Only $15/yr. + the cost of the two domains I have registered at Namecheap. I really don't want to put another $35 into paying for my email (Hushmail premium). But I might be willing to drop one domain and put the money I'd save by doing so into a modest, mid-level premium hushmail account. :)

I was just thinking: it would also be nice if they could remove the nag screen during sign-in, where free users must always choose the free account link (or one of the upgrades). I would suspect that if they introduce some low/mid-priced level that page with the ads would disappear ??

I see they added a few more screenshots of the new hushmail interface.

Incidentally, I don't know how many suggestions Hushmail can still implement, but right off the bat I see that the folders only show the number of unread emails. I'd prefer seeing all emails (new in bold; read in normal). Also, there seems to be a lot of wasted space in the folder list between the folder name and the number of messages. Not all of us have wide-screen monitors. Is there a drag-able vertical bar there between the folder list and the message list to allow it to be pulled back to the left side and close up that open space a bit ?

What is the difference between Hushmail and 4SecureMail?
It seems like the same thing except that Hushmail is a bit more transparent of what they can and cannot do and what algoritms they use and how.

If correctly used, Hushmail is also secure against MITM-attacks if the Hushmail Encryption Engine java-applet is loaded in the users web browser and the user is browsing encrypted emails. 4Securemail doesnt have that function.

Personally I would put a lot more trust in Hushmail.

The secure email providers I find the most secure are Hushmail and Countermail whereas I find Countermail by far to be the most secure one. On the other hand I like Hushmail a lot better cause their interface is nicer and they are cheaper.

Update: Hushmail now enlarged their free accounts from 2MB to 25MB. A very welcome improval! :) Hopefully more people will try out Hushmail and realize they are not only good for having secure email.

New Email
Hi, I was just setting up friends hushmail.com account for communicating with GnuPG public keys.

Couldn't find where to export public key on the new interface so I switched it to the old interface.

Got that working, but I can't seem to find where to switch it back to the new interface??

Hate being the guy to make people use older looking technology in order to be secure.

Thanks for the awesome email service, mostly love the new user friendly interface, just a few things are hard to find since the change!

Hi,

If you click "Check Mail" you should see a blue button under the message list that says "Start using the new Hushmail". Let me know if you can't find it,

Well, since this morning, Hush domain is down. When do you expect to go back, and what seems to be the nature behind reasons to go down?

Hello,

Thanks for getting in touch. We did have an outage during the night :(. It was resolved at 3:30 AM Pacific Time. This incident was caused by an outage at our data center here in Vancouver which seemed to have affected a number of companies in addition to us.

We post updates to Hushmail Service Issues when there is a service outage.

Thanks for your response Toby,

To tell you the truth, this is the first time I was ever restricted to use Hush, due to such outcome. Since my usage almost covers a decade, so no big deal.

But, just for sake of curiosity, how many times did you experience something similar, in, say, last ten years?

Thanks for being a Hushmail user for so long!

System-wide outages where we lose all connectivity at the data center like this one are very rare. There are 3 that come to mind in my memory: last night's, another one fairly recently, and then one caused by a major power outage in downtown Vancouver several years ago (during which backup power systems all failed too:(). There may have been others - this is off the top of my head.

More common are partial outages in which a small subset of accounts are affected. More often these result in temporary slowness rather than an actual outage. We have staff available 24/7/365 to deal with any issues that come up and we usually resolve things very quickly.

All of these issues are becoming much less frequent as we are actively increasing capacity and improving the reliability of our network.

Sorry I don't have have exact numbers on me at the moment - hope that helps a little though,

Toby
