What benefit to the sender of this message?

I started receiving an overload of spam on my verizon.net email account about six months ago. I can't figure out what the sender expects to achieve by sending this junk.

Is it possible for someone to explain the details to me?

Hi Andy,

It looks like there are three images that link to spam links near the top of the email.

Thanks, Ray.

I didn't open the mail, didn't click on any links. Damn, it's tough trying to filter out this incoming nonsense. The bad guys are very good at what they do.
