Yahoo Intermittent and Erroneous IP Based blocks - 553 5.7.1 [BL21]

Hello,

We have received reports that some senders are seeing intermittent IP blocks when sending to Yahoo! Mail, with the SMTP error message from us citing that the block was due to a Spamhaus listing -- e.g., "553 5.7.1 [BL21] Connections not accepted from IP addresses on Spamhaus PBL." (See our full list of SMTP error messages at SMTP Error Codes .)

If your IPs are currently not listed on any Spamhaus blocklist but you are seeing this error, please be assured that we are looking into the matter. We shall post an update once we have resolved the issue.

Thank you for your patience.

Regards,

The Yahoo! Mail Postmaster Team

Hi tedtarg,

Welcome to Email Questions! :welcome:

Thank you for sharing the information. What volume of mail do your outgoing mail servers do? Have you ever applied for the Yahoo bulk senders list? I have not been seeing the RBL blocks myself and I'm wondering if having previously declared which mail servers send which kinds of email (regular email, mailing lists, etc) with the Yahoo Bulk Senders Form may have helped me to not experience this problem.

we're a jobs website in Asia and we do about 1.5 - 2million emails a day (mostly job opportunity alert emails).. I have done the bulk mail declaration in the past... but not the particular form you mentioned...(yahoo's had several iterations of this declaration, i don't bother to keep submitting)... we've had a steady IP address for about 7 years or so and thus have an established sender reputation with yahoo...which seems to be a very important factor in yahoo's calculations...

i'm curious where you got that announcement from yahoo's postmaster...is it off a newsgroup or blog somewhere?

There is a Yahoo Postmaster Team group within Yahoo Groups that you can join to receive alerts about Yahoo email services.

I had the same problem the last two days with multiple Yahoo email addresses. Here's what I was looking at:

smtp;553 Mail from x.x.x.x not allowed - 5.7.1 [BL23] Connections not accepted from IP addresses on Spamhaus XBL; see http://postmaster.yahoo.com/550-bl23.html [550]

But checked up the IP address on Spamhaus and it wasn't listed.

tedtarg: Here is the Yahoo Group where the updates are, if you haven't found it yet - ymailadmin : ymailadmin

Thanks for your help popowich!

Hey popowich,

Just wanted to give you a little more information about the issue from my end, figured it might help solve the issue as I noticed it again for our emailing today.

I'm working for an economics firm and we have just under 200k contacts on our emailing list. We use an ESP (Contactology) to send out our email blasts and our last email had around 4k Yahoo Email contacts hard bounce with the same diagnostic code as above. Checked Spamhaus again and it appears that we're still not on any of the lists.

Let me know if I can help by getting you additional information.

What is the IP address or IP Range for the Contactology outgoing email servers? You'll want to check their IP addresses.

FYI, my last three email campaigns worked without this issue, but I'll keep you informed if I see it again.

Hello,

We have rolled out a patch this morning that addresses the spurious Spamhaus blocks described in our prior post. We are confident that this latest push resolves the problem. We are still in the process of making sure all our MTAs received the update, but for the most part, the issue should no longer be prevalent (as of 10am PDT).

We certainly appreciate your patience during the past few days. If you encounter further issues, please free to let us know us via http://postmaster.yahoo.com (click on the "Contact Us" tab).

Regards,

The Yahoo! Mail Postmaster Team

Hello,

Today, this problem reappeared briefly, though to a much-lesser extent than before. But still, it impacted legitimate senders. There were only a couple of hosts affected, and we promptly fixed them.

We're confident that these erroneous blocks are no longer happening across the board. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
