A Data Leak Prevention (DLP) system scans all outgoing emails for Social Security Numbers, Medicaid numbers, and credit card numbers sent in clear text.

DLP's can be implemented in a couple ways, including:

1. A proprietary system that quarantines a message and gives the sender an option to send as-is or send encrypted.
2. An implementation using regular expression filters to match patterns and force encryption and/or deny sending.

Data Leak Prevention is a service offered by some HIPAA Compliant Email Services.
