thunderbird backup

I tried to follow Big Dan's thread directions to burn Thunderbird email to disk but it only shows the email in numbers and letters (all garbablygook) when I open the burned mail folder.

I have several hundred messages I want to burn to disk all at once rather than trying to save each message as that will take far too much time.

I use Vista, Mozzilla and Thundebird.

Am I missing something? Can anyone help?
