Starred folders are driving me MAD!

Can someone please explain what the Starred Folders are? Mine start with "Starred 2" then go up and up, until I end up with one ending with "Starred 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 (and more!). I've tried to delete them, but they just keep re-appearing. These show in Hotmail and Gmail.

Which email service or webmail are you using to read your email? I don't think Hotmail has stars.

They show up in Hotmail and Gmail on all devices. I've managed to delete them from Hotmail (but not Gmail) on the main PC, but can't get rid of them from the iPad.
