Outlook Express 6 cannot open mail or mail in sub folders

I have a LOT in my Outlook Express 6 box and a LOT of sub folders. Foolishly when asked to compact folders I would ignore it.

Now something is corrupted. I tried removing the inbox.dbx file and re opening the program and I still cannot open the mail.

I cant afford windows 7 right now.. anyone have any other suggestions?

I can read the mail, just can't make it open in it's own window OR replay or write and NEW mail
