E-mail tracking is a method for monitoring the e-mail delivery to intended recipient. Most tracking technologies utilize some form of digitally time-stamped record to reveal the exact time and date that your e-mail was received or opened, as well the IP address of the recipient. E-mail tracking is useful when the sender wants to know if the intended recipient actually received the e-mail, or if they clicked the links. Most e-mail marketing software provides tracking features, sometimes in aggregate (e.g. click-through rate), and sometimes on an individual basis. Is it possible to opt-out of, or block, e-mail tracking on all emails received at my hotmail account?

Most of the technologies are based on tracking the picture in the mail or the links. When you open a mail containing picture usually you are asked (pop up window) if you want to open the pictures. if you choose 'no' you will only see the text of the mail but there will be no way of tracking whether you read it or not ( as long as you don't use any of the links).
