I have tried sending email from my hotmail account to gmail account and it was successful. The emails I am not recieving are from abroad - does that make a difference?

I am not receiving emails into my inbox even though the sender has confirmed that he has replied to the email I sent him. The sender has double checked my email address that he replied to and is correct. His emails to me are not bouncing back to him. Any ideas what could be the issue?
