Default copying emails back from external drive to new hard drive

Hi
I have read and followed all instructions on these posts but still cannot get thunderbird up and running with my backed up info. I have downloaded thunderbird about 8 times( having deleted each time all of the files) but it seems not to create a profile file until thunderbird is actually opened. This of course creates a different file than the one I copied across and changed file name.
Am running vista on a dell inspiron 6400
Thanks
