Spam being sent from my hotmail email address to all contacts

New Email
Hello,

As indicated in the subject line, I'm having a problem with spam being sent from my hotmail email address to everyone in my hotmail contacts list. I read a couple other messages here regarding the same or similar problems and like everyone else, I'm hoping the problem can be fixed so I don't have to create a new email address just to keep my friends and family from being spammed every couple of days.

I'm not sure what info you need to help me troubleshoot the problem. I don't use Outlook; I always access my hotmail account directly from hotmail.com.

Here is the header information from one of the delivery status notification failure messages. Actually, I'm not sure where the header info starts and ends, so here's the entire content of the source (with emails addresses from my contacts list disguised for their protection).

Thanks very much for any help you can provide.

Sincerely,

Lauren Talbott

Hi Lauren,

Immediately change your Hotmail password and password recovery security question and answer pairs.

If someone else has control of your Hotmail account you may have been phished. Did you recently "verify your account" or "confirm your account details" ? Typing your password in response to such as request is a common method that spammers use to get into your account. Here is some more information about how to protect yourself from phishing scams :

Hello,

Thank you for the prompt reply. I've changed my password and security question/answer as suggested.

No, I haven't followed any instructions or links to verify my account or confirm account details. I'm careful not to enter my password anywhere but on the hotmail.com login screen that I access by navigating to hotmail.com, never via an outside link.

I downloaded and then deleted all of my hotmail contacts. Any chance that will that prevent this from happening again?

Hi Lauren,

If you are sure you did not type your password somewhere that wasn't safe then the next step is to double check your computer to make sure there is not any spyware installed.

Try running malwarebytes.

Have you logged into your account from a public computer or a friends house?

Did you get tricked into going to a malicious web page for example a bad web site linked to from a friend on facebook?
