Locked out of Yahoo mail

Since last Thursday eve, I've been locked out of Yahoo mail through my Safari browser. I click on my mail icon, get the page where it asks me to upgrade to Firefox or Safari and I used to click the "Continue without upgrading' ink but now nothing happens when I do that. The page is essentially frozen. I found a link online that looks like an old text-like version of mail but it's very clunky, and adding contacts to an e-mail has to be done manually.

Is there a workaround to this problem?

TIA,
Deb

Does this work for your Safari on Mac?

  • Launch Safari.
  • In the menu bar at the top of your screen, click Safari and then select Preferences,
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • Select "Show Develop menu in menu bar"
  • Go back to the Safari menu bar, click Develop and select User Agent
  • Select IE 9

Thanks popowich - I'll give that link a try. (IMAP)
I have Firefox, but it doesn't work either.

Not having e-mail has been frustrating as I work from home and clients contact me 99% through e-mail. No clients, no work, no $$. :(

Just now I got access to 1 account before trying anything. I wish I knew if this had to do with my computer or if it's Yahoo!

Thanks,
Deb

I tried the above and there is no IE 9 (but there is 6, 7, or 8). There's a long list of other options & attached a screen capture.

Does "Other" give you the option to create a user agent string?

If yes, create a user agent with the following line for Firefox 25:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0

It will be interesting to see if the Windows string works from your Mac.

I pasted in the above line under Develop/user agent/other and got this page:

Host Header Required

Description: Your browser did not send a "Host" HTTP header field and therefore the virtual host being requested could not be determined. To access this web site correctly, you will need to upgrade to a browser that supports the HTTP "Host" header field.

So I just tried checking one of my e-mail accounts - and I got in. Tried another acct. - that worked, too. So perhaps Yahoo just decided to take a few days off?
I still have to go through the "Continue without upgrading" window, then the 'themes' window pops up after 5 or 6 seconds and you have to close that before you can then open e-mail. If there's a way around those 2 obstacles, I'd pay for the info! Why must Yahoo make e-mail so challenging?

Can you try upgrading your Safari?

It looks like you might not have the latest version, since newer versions list IE10 as one of the user agent options:

Show develop menu in menu bar.png Internet Explorer 10.png

Mac Safari User Agent IE10.JPG

I'm checking into the overall pros & cons of upgrading Mac O/S vs Safari versions.

I'll keep working on this so we have a nice "How-to" for Mac users.

We might only need to figure out a different custom user agent string that works with your O/S and Safari.

:thanks:

Hi Deb,

I'm the resident Mac guy. :) It appears as if older version of OS X (your Operating system) cannot get the latest Safari which means you won't have the option to change your user agent string to a later Internet Explorer as shown in the screen shots above.

Is another browser an option for you? The latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, or Opera should run on your Mac and get you around the browser upgrade warning.

Right, but shouldn't she be able to use a custom user agent string that's acceptable to Yahoo, for example the current Firefox user agent string from Firefox for Mac?

I'm going for the fake out to "trick" yahoo like the other guides for windows safari or Opera, not getting the actual upgrade done which is impossible on Mac according to Wikipedia:

Safari 7

Announced at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 10, 2013, the Safari 7/6.1[40] developer preview brought improvements in JavaScript performance and memory usage, as well as a new look for Top Sites and the Sidebar, and a new Shared Links feature. Additionally, a new Power Saver feature pauses Plugins which aren't in use.[41] Safari 7 for OS X Mavericks and Safari 6.1 (for Lion and Mountain Lion) were released along with OS X Mavericks in an Apple special event on October 22, 2013.[42]

I agree she should be able to fake out Yahoo but it doesn't appear to be point and click easy. Overall it's easier to use an alternate browser. Probably better security wise too because the version of Safari Deb is running more than likely has many vulnerabilities in the wild. Opera is the closest 3rd party browser to Safari.

Deb, what version of OS X are you running?

Deb, do the directions above, and this custom user agent string, work for you?

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0

Another member confirmed that Safari 7.0 on Mac OS X 10.9 works

They also report that running the latest version of opera on my mac - when you try the right click/open in a new tab works too.

On the opera window - you right click on the "continue without upgrading"

Clicking on the continue button does nothing.

Hi Guys - thanks for your kind attention. It's always comforting when you can hear voices out there in the vast darkness!
I'm on an ancient dinosaur here..Mac PowerPC G5, 10.4.11 (which is why I can't upgrade to anything)
I have Safari (4.1.3) and Firefox (3.6.25) browsers, but Firefox started acting a bit buggy last year and I stopped using it. previously it was my preferred browser.

My husband got me a Mac Mini this past February, but it's still in the box due to cold feet regarding hooking it up and correctly transferring apps, etc. (not files, I'm ok with those) from my computer. If I could set that up, I'd be running all the latest versions, and have Adobe CS6 (I'm a graphic designer) to load as well.
I was at an Apple store last week and asked one of the guys there about it and he answered in such a way to sufficiently convince me I shouldn't try doing the upgrade ("too complicated"). It's a shame the Mini is almost a year old and hasn't been used. If I could afford it (I lost my job a while back) I'd have someone knowledgeable come in and set it up as I'm afraid of doing something wrong. May I ask your thoughts, (though this Q perhaps should go in a different section) - is it as difficult as the Apple guy thinks?

Many thanks.

Is this the same string as what I tries a few days ago? It seems to look similar. That didn't work. Probably due to the Safari 4.1.3 I'm running.

Just checked...it's a different string, but still doesn't work. :(
