Outgoing mail not getting delivered in some cases

Over the past 24 hours or so, I have noticed that some of my outgoing yahoo email is not getting delivered.

It appears that the problem may be specific to some destination domain(s), although the problematic domain is correctly receiving non-yahoo emails.

Obviously, I'm not expecting anyone to be able to diagnose the problem from this terse description, but I'd like to ask whether others have noticed any problems.

This may or may not be related, but over the past 3-4 days I also get 'Temporary Error. Operation timed out' from yahoo email several times a day.

Thanks for any feedback.

Hello,

There is no access to outgoing Yahoo mail server logs, but is there any chance the destination recipient can check their logs for the missing email?

Did both you and them check your spam and trash folders for bounce messages?

If the page times out while you are trying to send it's possible the emails never actually sent.

FWIW I have not noticed any email problems but the Yahoo Help pages have seemed slower but they eventually respond without timing out for me.

Thanks for the reply.

SimSportPlyr > The destination is a very large corporation, and my recipient doesn't work in IT. So, checking the destination server logs would be only slightly easier than building a perpetual motion machine. ;-)

SimSportPlyr > We checked. There's nothing in the Spam folder. In most cases, there was no bounce, although in one case there was a bounce. I'm not savvy at reading bounce details, but I did not see a mention of the destination server in the diagnostic lines.

SimSportPlyr > My recipient and I did many tests this morning, one of which was to sent to multiple addressees, all in different domains. In all cases of sending-to-multiple-domains, at least one of the outgoing yahoo emails got delivered.

FWIW I have not noticed any email problems but the Yahoo Help pages have seemed slower but they eventually respond without timing out for me.

If they are part of a large corporation I'd hope they can open a ticket with their IT help desk and ask them to check and see if they can provide more details. Also, it might help me give you better direction if you can post the bounce message that you did receive.

My recipient is not motivated to open an IT ticket, because we've found that if I use non-yahoo email, there's no problem.

popowich -

Below is the bounce message with specific emails addresses removed.

If you like, I'd be happy to send you the unedited version privately.

Thanks.

This indicates that the mail server for the person you are sending to thinks that their email address doesn't exist.

  • Maybe there is something wrong with their spam filtering
  • Maybe it's an overloaded mail server
  • Maybe one or more of their MX records are misconfigured (ie: stale backup-mx)
  • Maybe you have a character separation between multiple recipients they don't like ( , vs ; )
If you haven't tried it already, try putting only their email address on the To: line and no other recipients.

Thanks very much for the analysis.

My friend and I have done quite a number of tests over the past 36 hrs, and one was to include only one recipient in the To line. That did not solve the problem.

The problem seems to be clearing up today, so maybe it was an overloaded server, as you say.

Thanks again!
