How to Stop Duplicate E-mail Messages ... ???

How can you stop duplicate e-mail messages? I had this problem for several years, and it is getting to be extremely frustrating and very time consuming.

I had this problem with my iBook G4, running OS X 10x (Tiger). And now I'm having the same problem with my new MacPro 2.93GHz, running OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard).

I use only Apple Mail.

I really would like to get to the bottom of this very annoying issue ....

I tried removing the plist file, but that didn't work for me. When I reopened mail, I was at the set-up screen, and had to set-up my mail from the beginning.

That is not the solution, so I had to replace the new plist file with the old one to access my mail again.

The first thing to check for is a filter or rule that might be causing duplicates of all of your emails to appear. If that is not it, in your configuration options do you have the option checked for leaving mail on the server? This issue sounds like a problem related to that or maybe your inbox itself. Who hosts the email and are you using pop3 to access the account? If you already have all of your emails off of the server, uncheck the leave a copy of email on the server option, and then try using a second email program on your computer to download all of the emails from your account. Once the pop account is cleared out the problem should stop.

I have always left my mail on the server, so if something happens (which has!), then I can at least retrieve some of my e-mail from the server.

I checked my Rules, but don't see any problems there.

I already installed Eurdora and set up my main e-mail account. I just downloaded Thunderbird, and will give that a try too.

When I have all of my e-mail backed up, then I'll delete all the messages from the server, and see what happens from there ....
